Marek Skulimowski - The Kosciuszko Foundation I Polish American Organizations
August 14, 2024

The exhibition will feature over 40 works, each reflecting the artist’s unique vision, rooted in the traditions of pre- and postwar Lodz avant-garde and inspired by the most radical 20th-century world art trends, such as constructivism, Bauhaus, and the De Stijl group.

The Kosciuszko Foundation presents the exhibition “Sławek Iwański – Posters”

Opening: Thursday, September 26, 2024 at 7:00 PM.

Iwanski’s first poster from 1993, dedicated to Wladyslaw Strzeminski, was made up of letters from the alphabet designed by Strzeminski. The visual appeal of the unusual lettering turned out to be an inspiration for many of Iwanski’s future works. The objects of Slawomir Iwanski’s other posters were Katarzyna Kobro (1994), Wassily Kandinsky (1996), de Stijl furniture (1997), and Bauhaus (1999). The principles of rational design based mainly on typography became the artist’s signature style. Meanwhile, he also created a series dedicated to Shakespeare’s texts.

Sławomir Iwański was born in 1947 in Sieradz. He studied at the Faculty of Graphics and Painting at the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Łódź; currently at the Władysław Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź.

From 1978 to 2017, he worked at his alma mater, where, from 1991 until his retirement, he led the Studio of Spatial Graphics and Poster Design. From 1990 to 1996, he served as vice-rector of the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Łódź for two terms, and in 1997, he obtained the academic title of professor in art. Since 1997, he has worked at the Faculty of Cinematography and Television Production at the L. Schiller State Higher School of Film, Television, and Theatre in Łódź, where he runs the Studio of Film Image Plasticity.

In parallel with his teaching activities, he has been involved in graphic design for many years. In addition to posters, his artistic achievements include many projects in the field of visual identification, designs of graphic signs, packaging, and numerous graphic designs for books, albums, and catalogs. He has designed for, among others: the National Museum in Poznań, the Museum of Art in Łódź, the Municipal Art Gallery in Łódź, the Blok Gallery and the Kobro Gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź, the BLOK Gallery in Łódź, the Opus Film Gallery in Łódź, the Łódź Publishing House, the PWSFTviT Publishing House in Łódź, the New Theatre in Łódź, the Przestrzeń dla Sztuki Gallery in Warsaw.
