February 28, 2021

This past Thursday February 25th, Allied Neurology and Interventional Pain Practice hosted another successful seminar. Attendees were invited by Dr. Dariusz Nasiek, Pain Management Specialist and Dr. Ravi Tikoo MD, Board Certified neurologist. A group of doctors, lawyers, chiropractors, and medical technology industry representatives met to discuss Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and new ways of diagnosing this condition and it’s sequelae with Tele EEG.

New Ways of Diagnosing for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) - Successful Seminar for Doctors, Lawyers, Chiropractors

Dr. Nasiek presented on the topic, with an introduction by Brian Yohsnsnov and Prince Singh of Medical Consultant Services. Topics of discussion included the silent TBI epidemic, difficulty of diagnosis, serious consequences, permanency, and new methods of diagnosis using EEG and Tele EEG.

Dr. Tikoo spoke about Traumatic Brain Injury resulting from injuries caused by external forces delivered to the head. He indicated that TBI can result in bruising of the brain (brain contusion), bleeding inside the brain (intracerebral hemorrhage), bleeding between the coverings of the brain and the brain (subdural or subarachnoid hemorrhage), or bleeding between the skull and coverings of the brain (epidural hematoma). TBI can also cause mild to severe swelling of the brain (intracerebral edema). Another potential consequence of TBI is seizures, which can occur early (within a week of TBI) or late (>1 week after TBI). Late onset seizures are more likely to recur and result in post-traumatic epilepsy.

Tele EEG can be used to diagnose post-traumatic epilepsy by showing whether the events are epileptic, the type of epilepsy, and the focal point of the seizures. Tele EEG is by far the most sensitive test to diagnose seizures in TBI. It is now available in our practice for all suspected patients. After the presentation, Wajdi Ahawa, the Tele EEG technician, demonstrated the technical aspects of providing home Tele EEG to patients. This is a new and promising way of diagnosing TBI complications and helping patients in need of post-TBI care.

The meeting was held according to the most recent safety guidelines put out by New Jersey Department of Health and was organized with safety as its highest priority. Good food, conversation, and new knowledge was enjoyed by all. The exciting response to Dr. Nasiek’s initiative will allow these monthly medical legal seminars to be continued.

The next meeting is expected to be held on March 11, at 7-9 PM in the same place. To all our friends, contributors, and professional family - we are extending a remote invitation to participate in this event by email and phone.
